How Before Blue mental health coaching works — Initial session
At the first session with your coach, you will:
Discuss what’s been challenging for you
Choose one or two key issues to focus on
Complete questionnaires
Clearly define the problem
Develop a practical, personalised plan
Start coaching
Your coach will then support you to book follow up sessions and review your progress. If you need different support, your coach can help you find a more appropriate service.
Five weekly sessions — up to 30 minutes
Each week you will work with your Before Blue coach to review their progress and work through your planned actions.
Your coach will give you practical activities to complete between sessions.
At the final session, your coach will help decide whether you need to seek more support. Around 5% of people who complete Before Blue may need more support. This could include talking to a GP or seeing a psychologist.
Sessions are delivered by phone or video call
Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm (AEST)
The program does not operate on public holidays
You can complete the program from anywhere in Australia
Measurable results
At each session, you will review your progress with your coach to see how you’re tracking.
Seven out of ten people who take part report a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression.

What is the difference between Before Blue and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?
Before Blue and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offer different types of support.
Before Blue provides structured early intervention, with up to eight coaching sessions delivered by the same coach. The focus is on learning practical skills, setting goals and tracking progress using evidence-based measures. The program is grounded in LiCBT and designed to support lasting change.
EAPs typically focus on short term or immediate support, often delivered by an allied health clinician, to help manage distress as it arises.

The Digital Mental Health Standards were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to support the identification of high‑quality digital mental health services. The Standards were informed by consultation with people who use digital mental health services, mental health professionals, and industry, with a focus on safety, quality, and effectiveness.
Accredited services are required to comply with the requirements. Accreditation is granted by an approved accrediting agency trained to assess safety and quality requirements. These agencies review evidence to confirm that services meet the Digital Mental Health Standards. Further information about the Standards and the accreditation process is available from the Commission.
